Mahmoud Khalil was arrested by immigration officials in the lobby of his university building in Manhattan, New York, on March 8 for his active participation in the pro-Palestinian movement against the Israeli war in Gaza. He was held for more than three months in a detention center in Jena, Louisiana.
In the lawsuit filed on Thursday, Khalil alleges that the Trump administration has tarnished his reputation, harassed him for political purposes, and unlawfully detained him for more than three months.
The lawsuit names the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the U.S. State Department as defendants.
In an interview with the Associated Press (AP), Mahmoud Khalil said, “He hopes that through his appeal, people will understand that the Trump administration cannot silence the protesters by intimidating them.”
Khalil added, “They are abusing their power. Because they think that no one can do anything to them. If there is no accountability, such injustice will continue unabated.”
Mahmoud Khalil’s court application could become a full-fledged case under the Federal Tort Claims Act.
Khalil said he wants to use the compensation money to help students and activists whose right to speak is being taken away by Donald Trump.
